Mpumalanga Province Hidden Gems - by Phumla Nkosi

Mpumalanga is found in the northeastern parts of South Africa and is known as the place of the rising sun. It has sub-tropical climate, particularly the Lowveld which, makes it an ideal destination even in the winter season.

Mpumalanga is famous for two things – The Panorama route and the Kruger National Park, but certainly has loads more to offer.

The Panorama route has attractions such as God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Blyde River Canyon, Lone Creek Falls, Lisbon Falls and Mac Mac Falls. All of which are a must see and should be added to your bucket list if you have never been

These places are found between Sabie and Graskop, although Graskop is the hotspot for most of the attractions.

The Kruger National Park

Mpumalanga has five of the ten Gates into the Kruger National Park.

·        Crocodile Bridge Gate found in Komatipoort

·        Malelane Gate found in Malelane

·        Numbi Gate found in Numbi

·        Phabeni Gate found in Hazyview

·        Paul Kruger Gate found in Hazyview

Deciding which gate is the best is subjective and depends on what a person is looking for out of the park. Phabeni gate is my favorite; it is close to Skukuza camp, which has amazing facilities, restaurants and views. A variety of animals can be spotted here, but nothing is ever guaranteed in the wild. Lastly, Phabeni Gate is close to Hazyview, which has a variety of accommodation and activities such as river rafting, elephant interactions and Zip lining that can make your visit even more worthwhile.

While all these places are amazing, my heart is drawn closer to the gems that are not given enough attention.

 Battery Creek Falls

Found in the small town of Kaapsehoop , this waterfall is a must see for any adventure lover. There is a short, yet steep hike before you can see it.

Genesis Route

It begins on the R40 towards Barberton and makes for the perfect road trip. It has picturesque views of the Makhonjwa Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; there are a few viewpoints along the route. In addition, the Genesis route passes along the mining town of Barberton, where they offer tours to a gold mine.

 Witklip Dam

Because MP doesn’t have a beach, dams are the next best thing. Witklip dam is perfect for a picnic or a swim with your loved ones. It is a place that doesn’t get too full so in most cases you will have it to yourself, now isn’t that great. Witklip dam also has a hiking trail, which offers amazing views of the dam and surrounding vegetation.

The Motor Museum at Casterbridge

A must visit for all car lovers; this museum has a collection of vintage cars dating back from 1911. Cars found there include the 1936 Jaguar SS100, which is the only one found in South Africa; a 1929 Austin Seven; Model T Fords and many more.

What makes these gems even more special is that they have no entrance fee and can allow one to stretch their holiday budget even further.

This article is just a brief summary of what Mpumalanga has to offer, but is a good place to start for someone who has been hoping to go to this beautiful sunny province.
