Drakensberg - KwaZulu Natal

Drakensberg is a world heritage site that lies on the borders of Lesotho and KwaZulu Natal, known as “uKhahlamba” in isiZulu which means “barrier of spears”

Drakensberg was declared a world heritage site in the year 2000 for its spectacular natural landscape. Drakensberg is the highest mountain range in Southern Africa. The drive to the Drakensberg is beautiful passing the mountains. I’m one of the very few people that enjoys driving. It took us about 4 hours driving from Johannesburg to Cayley lodge where were staying.

Cayley lodge is in Bergview set in the Central Drakensberg with views of Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle ranges. We arrived a few minutes before check in so we decided to have lunch first before we check in. I am obsessed with the restaurant views, it is just mountains galore, I feel like I’m in mountain heaven. The food on the other hand, not as great as the mountains.

Our villa has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining area and a lounge area. Outside there is a patio with braai facilities a dinning table with chairs and a plunge pool. The resort offers one bedroom villas up to 4 bedroom villas for larger groups. The reason why I prefer villas it’s because I love having my own space, I prefer to make my own breakfast so that I don’t have wake up early to make it on time for hotel or resort breakfast. My kids also love swimming so villas with pool works best for me cause they eat breakfast and my fish swim all day and only pop their heads out to say “mom can we have a snack” #momlife

I do love one stop shop resort, meaning resorts with lots of activities. Cayley lodge has lots of activities there is a spa on site. It is a very basic spa but they get the job done. You can kayak or go on the resort boat at the bell park dam. You can go for a short hike to the dam. We went on a quad bike ride, the ride itself was quite bumpy. The view picturesque, the ride had that Drakensberg postcard views. It was very scenic and I recommend it.

Other activities close by are hot air balloon for those who lives a daring life maybe one day I will try it but for now I will pass. You can also go on a helicopter ride for those sweeping view of the Drakensberg area. Some good old horse riding is another activity that you can do. Drakensberg region is also famous for camping. You will never run short of activities in Drakensberg that is why I always return to this gem to try different activities. Till we meet again “Drakensberg”.
